Holiday Accommodation
The Bathing House

This truly unique and most charming Grade 2 listed cottage stands in possibly the most idyllic and desirable location on the Northumberland cost. Set in a superb and secluded position on the cliff edge with a sandy cove below, it commands panoramic coastal views from every window. The majestic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle can be seen in the north, whilst to the south there are distant views of Coquet Island. The coastline in this region is characterised by a mixture of rocky inlets and lovely sandy beaches with attractive walks along the cliff tops. A 14 mile coastal footpath between Beadnell and Almouth passes nearby providing the opportunity of walking through some of the most outstanding coastal scenery in the country, this part of the Heritage Coast being designated an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' as well as being 'A Site of Special Scientific Interest'. The Coast and Castles cycle route passes nearby.

The Bathing House is approached by a 400 metre track and is ideal for a family holiday or for those seeking a secluded, romantic coastal location. The Bathing House was built in the early 19th Century by the 2nd Earl Grey who was the Prime Minister responsible for the passing of the Great Reform Bill of 1832 and whose monument stands at the top of Grey Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. He had 16 children and the house was built specifically for the family to go bathing. On the rocks south-east of the house, the iron pegs can still be seen where round tents were put up for the children to change in, and just below  them two bathing pools were hacked out of the rock. Just behind the rock pools lies the 'cut' which is a channel where swimmers could go once they were competent. The design of the house includes a large upstairs sitting room (now the main bedroom) where Lady Grey used to sit and watch the children bathe, and where tea was served by the caretaker who lived below.

The Bathing House is now owned by Howick Trustees Ltd. a charitable trust who also owns Howick Hall nearby where the gardens are open to the public between March and October, daily from 12-6pm and where light lunches an afternoon teas are available in the Earl Grey Tea House. Craster is 2 miles north. Alnwick is 7 miles away.

The Old School

Superbly renovated former school. Only a quarter mile from the splendid cliff top walk along the Heritage Coastline. This newly renovated listed building, was once a school for the children of Howick Village, and part of the Howick Estate which was the home of the 2nd Earl Grey, who became Prime Minister in 1830 and whose monument stands at the top of Grey Street in Newcastle. After the death of the 5th Earl Grey the Estate passed to his daughter, Lady Mary Howick, and then through her to his grandson, the present Lord Howick of Glendale.
